AT The WANDERERS END SANCTUARY

WE ARE A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE DEDICATED TO DEMONSTRATING A CERTAIN KIND OF LIFESTYLE.
Call it “eco”, “eco-groovy”, “green”, “sustainable”, “mindful”, “small footprint”, or any of a number of other buzz words, the effect on our lives is the same: We each make it a point to live in a way that doesn’t use more than our share of resources or produce more byproduct than the systems of our environment (made by us or provided by nature) can process..

Gaian Living Fellowship Center
The Gaian Living Fellowship Center building will be at the centre of the ecovillage as it hosts a series of educational, and recreational activities, some of which are listed here.

About the GLFC
Its construction will be first and funded by the dues and fundraising and is to be constructed using local materials, which as far as possible were natural and/or recycled (whilst complying with stringent building control requirements). It is to be built by residents, local tradesman, and volunteers. The Instant Ecovillage design concept surrounded by earthship tire construction and cobb to provide insulation, and heating is supplied by a combination hydro power (underfloor), passive solar gain, and biomass (Masonry stove). The building is to entirely off-grid and run on renewables.

The WES Mandate:
The WES main raison d’etre will be a centre for the research, education and promotion of low-impact living. This will be achieved through the provision of hands-on courses, tours, presentations, visitor and volunteer opportunities along with a range of outreach work.

In addition, it will act as both an organisational and practical centre for the Gaia Works and Eco Junk smallholdings, providing a meeting space as well as facilities for processing their land-based produce and exchanging goods. The GLFC hub will also provide a focal point for facilities and services provided for the local community such as a hall, seasonal WE Mart shop (part-time) and seasonal café (part-time). The GLFC hub will assist land based livelihoods in the local area by providing an opportunity for producers, local to the site, to sell their goods. These goods are freely available to residents.

The GLFC Hub will be managed in such a manner so as to treat all user groups with fairness and consideration. The GLFC hub shall be operated in such a way that it does not have a negative effect on the living standards of the Wanderers End Sanctuary residents nor cause a breach of their management plan.

The concept for the Wanderers End ecovillage is that of a collective of eco-smallholdings working together to create and sustain a culture of land-based self-reliance. The project supports a permaculture approach to land management – in which human beings are considered an intrinsic part of the ecosystem. As a result the approach to environmental management is one of stewardship for future generations rather than exploitation for short term gain.

The residents of the ecovillage will have come from all walks of life and whilst some have experience of low-impact living and natural building, most may have none.  Water, waste and electricity are managed independently and the plots are largely dedicated to growing food, land-based businesses, growing biomass and processing organic waste. Land-based enterprises include fruit and vegetable production, livestock and bees, woodland and willow crafts, value-added food production, seed production, and restorative agriculture & permaculture .

The project is required to substantially meet its needs from the land and demonstrate positive environmental, social and economic benefit.

The ecovillage planning to begin construction in spring of 2020 and is currently midway through its set-up phase.

Natural Building

The dwelling houses, workshops and barns we are to have all will be designed and built by the residents themselves, with a lot of help from volunteers. For the most part they are built from local natural materials or recycled materials. Low-impact construction is by its very nature, organic and low-cost. The dwellings plan to be completed in the ecovillage have cost between $5,000 and $14,000 while using our instant eco-village components.

Energy and Water

Electrical power is generated from a series of micro photovoltaic installations along with a 27kW hydro generator. Heating power is supplied from timber (either waste timber from our woodland management or from short-rotation-coppice biomass plantations) and natural methane from digesters . Domestic water comes from a private well and other water needs are predominantly met from harvesting rainwater.

Landscape

The land at Wanderers End Sanctuary, in common with most of our rural landscape, depleted pasture. Biodiversity and Soil health indicators are expected to be poor, with the farm previously used for the intensive production. Our project will diligently work to create a new infrastructure across the landscape that will support a wide spectrum of ecologies that in turn will provide for the diverse needs of its human inhabitants. Pathways and usage areas wiil be created across the site and water patterns will be carefully mapped and harnessed to retain as much water in the landscape as possible. Wild plants and native trees will be planted alongside specific plants chosen for their adaptability and productivity. Plateau domestication animal husbandry techniques are to be employed by residents as a method of managing landscape evolution whilst simultaneously providing meat, dairy and fibre produce to provide for our villagers and the surrounding communities needs through our project.

The Vision

Wanderers End Sanctuary aims to establish a thriving example of low-impact development. The Gaian Living Fellowship Center will be built as a sustainable community center providing an educational resource pointing the way for truly sustainable rural developments of the future. Precious Plastics ways of eliminating the concept of waste while also providing for our village and its surrounding community needs The land will be developed to improve the synergy of the different habitats across the site, simultaneously enhancing bio-diversity and leading to an increased but sustainable yield from the land. Where there will surely  degraded agricultural pasture, Wanderers End Sanctuary and Gaian Living is empowering ecovillage residents to create a landscape of vitality and abundance.
